Understand, therefore, that my declaration of my Cause, my witness unto Truth, my manifestation of the Light of the world, my judgment, my resurrection, my healing, and the miracle of life—that very stated purpose, that very life lived is not fulfilled or completed until the two-thousand-year dispensation is sealed and is sealed in the body of lightbearers who now wait and do receive my mantle as I received it from Elijah. <5>

So now you receive it from me, from Elisha, to your very own heart. And you understand that it is the laying of the foundation for your forward movement into the age of Aquarius.

Beloved sons of the Most High God, beloved light of the eternal Great Central Sun, I therefore do make known to you this day the sealing, the sealing, the sealing of my causal body in the earth, as that kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven!

Realize, then, that your mission is founded upon the rock of the release of my causal body, for which you have provided a vehicle, your very own vehicle, in this day and in this hour. Thus, beloved hearts of light, as you have prepared, and receive that portion which you are able to receive, so it is the passing of the torch of my dispensation unto the two witnesses, unto your lifestreams.

And now you will receive from the heart of Saint Germain the very fiery coil of the dispensation of Aquarius. And that mission, beloved ones, will not be complete until two thousand years hence you also stand as ascended beings to release unto those who yet abide as unascended ones the full-gathered momentum of your reason for being and your attainment in the higher octaves of that two-thousand-year dispensation.

And thus it is, and thus it ever has been for the fulfillment of the mission of the two witnesses of every age. And those witnesses, beloved hearts, become therefore in manifestation, signed and sealed as your own twin flames. Alpha and Omega within you witness unto the Truth, dispensation after dispensation, until you yourself stand the living Word and the living Christ to bequeath your momentum unto those who have been the vessel for your Christ attainment.

Therefore, understand the necessity for keeping the vigil and sustaining that mounting, that building, that spiraling momentum for the physical chalice to be built in these sessions of the sacred fire—to contain the cup of light and to receive a transfer not only from myself but also from other hierarchs of light whose hour is come for the fulfillment of their mission after so many thousands of years, where the Great Law does necessitate that they once again deposit that momentum of light in their unascended chelas.

Therefore, watch and pray and entertain strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. <6> Watch and pray and realize the very purpose of the vigil of the hours in the building of your own forcefield of light. For all that which you send to the nations and all that which you give must by cosmic law return to your aura. And therefore, many of you are building, as it were, the forcefield that is akin to that of the Goddess of Liberty, the Mother of the nations who does hold the flame of Liberty for them.

And you will find that one day the Goddess of Liberty will also come and speak to you and deliver to the hearts prepared and uplifted that fiery torch and that Book of the Law for the nations of the earth, of the I AM Race. And you will understand why you have been called to keep the vigil of the hours by the masters of the Great White Brotherhood, by the Darjeeling Council.”…

Staff at the Inner Retreat grows. Many plans for building and development of “the Ranch” were brought forth.

During the Reagan Presidential cycle, [1980-88] Saint Germain commented repeatedly on the import of keeping the Flame for the President. He (or another master), as I clearly recall, said “As the Keepers of the Flame go, so goes Reagan.”

Saint Germain spoke of how the Masters could sponsor someone simply based upon one point of agreement with the Masters. Reagan, especially in his rhetoric, agreed with the Masters on the need to remove the communists from Central America, the need for a defense against nuclear attack, the ending of legalized abortion, the challenging of Philippine President Ferdinand E. Marcos in his abuses. Reagan at one time had mentioned his knowledge of the legend of the unknown speaker at the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

At one point, Mr. Reagan made a remark about the head of the Federal Reserve, whom Mother had called a Watcher [an arch-fallen one]. Reagan challenged this person somewhat, I don’t remember details. He was soon after that shot, but survived the attempted assassination.

“We come, then, to deliver those who know not that they have been betrayed by the fallen ones, who know not that it is their hour and the power of darkness—who know not yet that they themselves are the ones who are nailed to the cross. Blessed hearts, when the hour of the initiation come by the hand of Maitreya, though some sleep and only the few are awake—yet the initiation is come!

See it, then, typified in the experience of the assassination attempts, and those that have succeeded, on the presidents of the United States of America. See how in these years and in these cycles of twenty years <9> there has been this attempt to deny the office which does represent the Christ Self of every citizen in whom there burns the flame of the Goddess of Liberty . Understand, then, that the reenactment of the crucifixion is typified, then, in the assassination of President Lincoln and of Kennedy and of all the rest.

See, then, that this comes again <10> as the sign and as the symbol that in every age the Nephilim gods <11> will appear—and they will crucify by neglect! And those who are crucified, blessed hearts, often do not know, even until they are taken by holy angels, that they have been called and chosen to be a part even of the crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Let us minister unto a nation.

ABOUT EL MORYA

I loved him before I knew him….
But then, I have always known him.
Morya.

I remember when he held me in his arms in my little white christening dress. He my father and I so loved, so wanted, so proud to be his. What greater bliss than to love and to live in the heart of one’s Guru forever. What memories nourish the soul in the hours of the Battle Victorious….

I knew him as the Friend of God.

He was always there showing me what I wanted to be…what I could become because he embodied everything that to me was and is God.

Everything I know about God I know to be true because of him.

Morya. The mere mention of his name brings tears to my eyes. Because his love for me is so great that to touch it with some portion of my being is almost unbearable. For such a love can only exist in heaven. To sustain such a love on earth, one must immediately translate it into action.

I must be about my Father’s business because I love him…so much.

How will the world ever know or understand such a love? Why, it is the cause of all my striving and my will to be. My Guru. Yes, I want to be because he lives. And I want to be where he is. And he is everywhere I am when I am in the heart of God’s will. For that is his abode.

He is a mighty eagle that soars beyond the Himalayas. His spirit is so tender, his heart so serenely love, of such immaculate intent that his shield and armor must protect us both from the divine encounter…until it is ordained.

Did you ever know a love so great that you must protect yourself from it, lest it consume you? Then, my friend, you have known Morya and you, too, have loved him. And now you must know him as I do.

Morya is the forget-me-not that grows and blooms inside your heart. The little blue flower is always there. It is a part of yourself. You wouldn’t be you without it. You almost take it for granted. But it is Morya peeping through the aperture of self.

He is oneself…one’s finer self. All that one owns that is noble has come unto one’s temple gliding down the sunbeams of his heart. Morya—shafts of sunshine enter my world, forming cords of love to his heart.

Treasures of eternity occupy time and space where I am because he loves me. Because I am his own.

If I know the meaning of Verity, it is because his own pure reason has filled my mind. He has taught me all I know, from the beginning to the ending of all things bright and beautiful.

He has shown me celestial canopies where cherubim hover. He the illustrious has illustrated to me the mathematics of the stars. He has taken me to the central sun and back again. He has introduced me to his friends on other highways and other worlds.

He has sent me on this mission to his own: To teach them the way of the Will of God and to bring them home to his heart. And so he has called me Mother, for ‘tis the mothering of his blessed sons and beloved daughters that he so requires in this hour of the consummation of worlds….

I love him with a burning love that is the Refiner’s fire—a fire that cannot be quenched until it has done its work. This love translates into a desiring to do more for him, and more and more, until his work is done and our work may rest for a little season until the higher calling comes.

Mother, from the introduction to Mysteries of the Holy Grail

One of the most memorable experiences of my life took place when the messenger of God descended from the heights of cosmic consciousness in answer to my call for his intercession in the healing of a sweet child of light, who, by some freak of darkness, had been shot at close range with a .30-06 rifle by the neighborhood bully. The single bullet entered his right side, went through part of his liver and spleen, and passed three-eighths of an inch from the heart, shattering his elbow and finally lodging in his wrist.

I saw with my own eyes the skill, the love, the infinite patience of Gabriel as he tended this child day by day for months until he was made whole. The doctors said the only reason he survived was his “will to live.” He came to be known as the miracle child of Kootenai Hospital.

To see the heavens opened, to see an archangel whose daily duties take him to the Great Central Sun and across the galaxies so personally involved in the life of one child—one beautiful child—is enough to move my soul to eternal devotion and sacrifice, that the gifts of God so readily available through prayer and the dynamic decree might be placed directly in the hands of the loving servants of Christ on earth and all who can believe in the attendance of holy angels in their lives.

Many believers prayed for that child and not I alone. But I was the witness—in full waking consciousness, with my eyes open wide to the inner planes, I saw how the fire of my heart penetrated the veil and made the initial contact with Archangel Gabriel by the call of deep love that always compels love’s answer.

To be sure, my call was reinforced in a prayer vigil of the hours held by classmates, family and friends for one small boy who had a right to live, whose heart had earned the attention of an archangel. Gabriel was the Friend who championed his cause like a Knight of cosmos, like the Good Physician, so that he could laugh and play and sing and grow with the wind and the stars to become a man and to fulfill his destiny—not alone on earth, but in the vast beyond that is still his to discover by the grace of the hosts of the LORD and one glorious archangel named Gabriel.

You can imagine my joy when this child, after months of operations, hospitalization, and convalescence, walked up to the altar a year later on Easter morning to receive the baptism of Jesus Christ. With tears blinding my eyes, I said to Stephen: “Are you whole?” He answered, “Yes, I am whole!” Praise the LORD and praise him in his servant Archangel Gabriel, our friend!

1983 CLASS OF THE SOLAR RING

In 1983 there was a very cosmic class where the Solar Ring decree was released. Mother in her meditation had traced the source of evil to its coordinates in Cosmos and made invocations for it to be taken. Sanat Kumara was given the honor of placing the torch to it. Here is one excerpt from this class.

…I draw the solar ring around the Middle East and all nations around the Mediterranean who are comprised in part of laggard evolutions.…

…Those of you who remember the circles of light formed by ring upon ring of mighty angels in the Gustave Dore paintings may now visualize an infinite number of concentric rings established around the Middle East by my bands of seraphic hosts.

And you will now see at inner levels, as I reveal it to the messenger, a dazzling white light, a radiance so bright that it is necessary to shield the eye in order to glimpse it. This is the radiance of concentric solar rings drawn around this Mother chakra of the earth and this place so consecrated by the Lord Jesus Christ, by Mother Mary and Saint Germain and other saints who came to hold the balance against the darkest of darkness focused through these evolutions.

Beloved children of the Sun, we use our body, God’s Mystical Seraphic Body, to form these rings; and we ask you in the name of God, the Great I AM, to daily invoke the action of the sacred fire and to give a special insert to beloved Astrea for the consuming of the cause, effect, record and memory of the evil minds and the murderous hearts who have come to roost in the Middle East. ON THE HISTORY OF THE I AM RACE
PERSPECTIVES OF THE DARJEELING COUNCIL

Beloved El Morya takes from his library shelf a large tome bound in a substance like leather and with gold leaf. It is an old, old book, and it is the history of the I AM Race.

The I AM Race are those who are the descendants of Lord Sanat Kumara. Let us understand that the seed of light, the Christic seed descended from on high, are those which have this I AM Presence of the Lord God. Those who have descended from on high shall truly ascend. <2>

It is the history of this race with which we are concerned in this hour. For all other evolutions and lifewaves upon earth depend for their appearing upon these “sun-manifestations” of God. Those who carry the light of the sun in their hearts, the original Central Sun, are therefore called the offspring of the Most High, or sons of [i.e., the light emanation of] God.

Far more lifewaves upon earth, too numerous to number, are the evolutions without that I AM Presence and Christ Self and threefold flame. In an attempt to take the light of the sons of God, it was clearly the design of the fallen angels to create a race—godless and without the divine spark—which race, by their sheer numbers, should therefore multiply and increase and cover the earth with darkness, thus isolating the sons of God and surrounding them and separating them .

In addition, as you know, these fallen ones who once had the divine spark lost their light and also joined their own godless creation. The giants and the overlords and those who have manipulated the life-force and the genetic strain of earth’s evolutions thus set about taking command of the earth and standing at the helm of the ship of state, nation by nation.

Beloved hearts, these individuals have positioned themselves, as you well know, to the right, to the left, and in the middle of the entire political and economic spectrum. Thus, you will understand how the seed of Light, the seed of Christ, and the tares sown among the good seed <3> are now intertwined karmically in many situations upon earth—a sprinkling of the sons of God and many of the fallen ones occupying seats of power in all fields.

… I review this history that you might understand what are the forces juxtaposed in this hour.

… So many changes of hands, so many voices in Congress, so much deliberation and confusion, and therefore a sound policy is not as easy to effect in a republican form of government as it is where there is a single individual or a group of individuals who hold the reins of power. So much for the virtues of the kings of Israel and of Judah . In one office the power of the Godhead could be directed to the people, monitored, and held in balance by the presence of the prophet.

Beloved hearts, the abuse of that office of power has resulted in the destiny of the new age when the government should be upon the shoulders of the Lord Christ <4> as the individual Christ Self, The Lord Our Righteousness. <5> Unfortunately, those who have not the I AM Presence or the descent of the Son of God have not the indwelling standard, they have not the indwelling Christ Self.

Thus, when the people champion the cause of Truth through that Christ consciousness, they may form rings of light even around a fallen one and compel that fallen one, by the voice of the people, to act in the name of God. The consistency of pressure which must be brought to bear upon such individuals, who have no conscience of their own but only act when moved by power, is not such that we may depend upon it. For the same winds may blow in the other direction when the people themselves are seized by that which is not coming forth from the Christ consciousness but by some move, popular, that is actually anti-Christ in nature—though it may be coated and colored with virtuous precepts and an abundant selection of quotes from the world’s great prophets and philosophers.

Thus, the same individuals who may be one day an instrument of our own chess move may the next day appear on the dark side of the board. We realize, then, that our experiment in freedom and in the violet flame and in the tremendous calls that have gone forth for the victory of this nation and the world’s freedom under this administration could only be played out so far.

In this hour, therefore, there has come over the White House a great darkness as manipulators of interstellar space, seeking to use those who have not the divine spark, have been able to insert in that which is still a retreat of the Great White Brotherhood influences and forces of anti-Buddha that have worked at great counterpurpose to the goals established by me through Godfre <6> and to the many sons of light who have kept the flame of the patriotism of the I AM Race.

I report these things to you, for you ought to know that both in the physical octave and from interstellar space, infiltrators and interlopers have attempted to turn and overturn the occupant of that highest office. Blessed hearts, regardless of the position or the past record of espousing liberal causes of that president, you must realize that anyone, even one who may have leanings toward an undefiled support of the flame of freedom, when bowed down by this type of ray and infamy and excessive manipulation and power politics, may actually be convinced, psychologically and within his own mind, that some form of compromise—even a deadly form of compromise—is necessary to the steadying and the holding of the ship of state and the preserving of opportunity for oneself in office again.

Politics, as you know, has always been a dirty game because it is the game of serpents; it has been going on for thousands of years. And in their rivalries and in their coalescing and forming of groups to move together, there was always the trading off and sometimes the buying off and sometimes the blackmail.

Therefore, beloved hearts, there are individuals who have been singled out by astral forces and the enemies in embodiment, who have represented and espoused our cause, who have either been privately compromised or else mentally turned around and confused. Some even have been taken from embodiment, not by natural causes.

Thus, we see the lines of force being drawn. And we see that few among the American people (and even sometimes our Keepers of the Flame forget) realize that in this hour far more deadly forces and a far greater threat to freedom are at hand than there have been at any time in recent history….

Unfortunately, beloved hearts, we do not have endless numbers of hearts of living fire who can walk in and assume the most powerful offices in the federal government, in the halls of justice, or in the states. Individuals who are elected have been preparing for ten and twenty and thirty years, and they have built—many of them—powerful machines and support to that end.

We must consider, therefore, what are those policies that must be held, must remain steady, must be promoted. And we must consider that it is the Christ of every individual lightbearer who must bring that pressure upon those who have either a very small substance of the divine spark or none at all. That pressure of the light and of the will of God must be presented legitimately, according to the will of God and the science of the spoken Word—never by manipulation or any form of subterfuge.

It is the pressure of the Light of which I speak—and holy prayer and the visitation of holy angels and the reinforcement of all who are sincere and worthy and well-intended , who yet believe in America as the heart of freedom to the earth. These require our support to be cut free by the beloved angels of Almighty God to exercise right decision, to be overshadowed by the Cosmic Christs and the descending Buddhas.

Therefore, let us commune together and consider those things that ought to be and those things that ought not. For the slipping away of the boundaries of freedom, the delivery to the Soviet system of more and more of the landed areas of the world as well as of their populations, allowed and tolerated by free nations, must be surely the infamy of infamies of all centuries.

How can it be? And how can the people of this nation or any nation be so accustomed to the take-over of nations and the nonresponsiveness of the hearts of light? Yet it is so.

Therefore, we here in Darjeeling highly resolve that this nation under God shall survive as the Union of the I AM Race—that this nation America, that this nation India shall remain under the protection of the Great White Brotherhood as long as freedom-fighters in embodiment will keep that flame for the defense of these two nations as the polarity of the planet. We therefore resolve that Central America and the Caribbean shall not be overrun by the warlords, by the fallen ones, by the Communist hordes!

This is our resolution, and to see it come to pass we must have continuous calls for the rolling back of the nefarious forces of the secret agents of the KGB and of the Communist network worldwide. We are determined, therefore, that there shall not be an alliance of international organized crime with the world totalitarian movements or any other manipulators of the people found in the Western economies. We are determined that the Herods and the Pilates of this age shall not form their alliances to defeat the sons of God.

Therefore, we, the Darjeeling Council of the Great White Brotherhood, with Keepers of the Flame, resolve that, one for one, the ascended masters will overshadow the Keepers of the Flame as never before, that their calls might be multiplied and they might be electrodes of our Electronic Presence in physical embodiment. We, the ascended masters, have determined to step through the veil through our chelas!

This, my announcement to you, may come as a rejoicing and as a warning. For you must be prepared to walk in seven-league boots and to rise from the pettiness of self-concern and the embroilment of the personality and the ego in those things which must be put behind.

I would say it is a most noble and dangerous calling to be a chela of the Great White Brotherhood in this hour. For, beloved hearts, to be taken up in that ascended-master consciousness and walk with us means that you must be constant and steady in your calls, in your service, taking care not to allow imbalances of rest, interruptions in the necessary and proper care of the four lower bodies, proper food and rest, and a minimum of exercise required, the balance of the light and the fresh air, the sun and the decree work, and a service that is concentrated and not constantly interrupted.

The service of your sacred labor may also be the instrument of our Presence. You must not allow disruptions—physical, mental, or emotional—in your service to the Light, whatever your capacity. For these disruptions break the flow of the rhythm of life and allow for the introduction of error and riptides and energies that will throw you and your work off balance.

Understand, beloved hearts, that we must demand of our chelas that resolution to come up higher in the vibration that must be held for the earth. We have done all that we can do, given the givens. We have done all that we can do, considering the regular dynamic decrees, your level of consciousness, and the consciousness of those who represent the governments of the nations.

Considering that all is being done that we can do, our only proposal which we may offer to the decelerating and declining world conditions is that there must be change. We have changed, we have accelerated to the Great Central Sun and we have decelerated with our light to your very forcefield. The only unknown factor in the equation, beloved hearts, lies in the perpetual free will of the Keeper of the Flame. For you to decide to change, to shed the next coil of self-limitation, to come up higher and be our vessel, is the only point that can make the difference in this hour.

Many who should have espoused our cause in the political arena go their way and back away from the challenge. Our assessment is many in America are not capable of carrying the dispensation which you, together with the messenger, have invoked in the past dispensation of these elections. They have not been able to bear the cup, for they are not Keepers of the Flame. And without the dynamic decree of the Word and the sacred science, they have been overrun by the clever archdeceivers, the toilers and the spoilers.

ON THE PROCESS OF PURGING OF THE EARTH OF DARKNESS
AND THE ROLE OF THE CHELA

We would therefore speak to you this day of our support given to elemental life. My heart is one with the heart of Virgo and Pelleur. Thus we combine our energies. And there is, during this dictation, the stepping-down of the light of Arcturus and Victoria through Virgo and Pelleur through the ascended and unascended messenger. Therefore the acceleration of our hearts is as one heart. And there is a fusion. And the light which pours forth is for this holding of the balance that is so needed.

For you see, my beloved, in the very epoch of enlightenment and transmutation there is a forcing to the surface of most disturbing elements and the records of war and death. And hell itself is turned inside out and these astral hordes then come to the surface. And there are disturbances here and there upon the planetary body and bloodshed and insanity.

Thus this balancing of life in order to consume death rests upon those who realize that in holding the light and the greater light there will be for a period the flushing-out of greater darkness and that greatest darkness that must be faced by the highest initiates upon the planetary body.

Therefore you may go here and there to other activities and teachers, so-called. They may introduce to you a path of personal benefit or improvement or meditation or the enjoyment of bliss. But very few will emphasize the path of holding the balance for planetary karma, of interaction with elemental life and Elohim, of preparation for the crucifixion as the fastening of the soul to the cosmic cross of white fire. <6>

It is the comprehensive path of the soul’s ascent to God that we of the Great White Brotherhood have set forth in all of these years of our service with our messengers. And you must understand that in all of the teachings that are there waiting to be published you will find the keys to your own victory and to your own ascension.

Therefore, on this Path—as in reality, as in the actuality of life itself—there will be upheavals, there will be turmoil, there will be the coming to the surface of all that must pass away into the sacred fire.

There are stations in life where there is a covering-over of the sub – conscious; and on the surface, people experience what they call “peace” and even some advancement here and there. But prick them almost on the surface alone and suddenly there comes to the fore all of this which is untransmuted. And you find that these lesser paths and lesser teachers do not afford souls the opportunity to go to the very core of Life and once and for all to attain that resolution of God-harmony that can literally thrust the soul into the octaves of light right while he remains in physical embodiment. And this is our desire—that you should be the outposts of our Brotherhood on behalf of millions.

Therefore there are many who gather in their sophistication, in all of their intellectual pursuit of the paths of the East, even those who use drugs and various means to enhance the psychic or spiritual experience. And they point the finger at Guru Ma. And they point the finger at her chelas. And they speak of the long hours of invocation, of impracticality, and that these are mere hypnosis of the self. They point, then, to the inexperience of these chelas who do not have their supposed hoary wisdom or their understanding of the “true” path.

Beloved ones, this is a most unfortunate situation. For you see, they lead many souls of light who trust their appearance and the seeming manifestation of wisdom and therefore follow them. And these trusting souls of light look to outer appearances and the outer calm and outer sympathetic vibrations, and they consider that they have found a real live master.

Well, beloved hearts, I would show you the image of a real living master. And I would ask you to take note: It is the image of the Lord Jesus Christ himself.

Can you imagine these sophisticated ones accepting as a master one who bore his cross to Golgotha , who allowed himself to be scourged, to be nailed to that cross, to be spat upon? <7> In the hour of greatest mastery is the appearance of greatest weakness.

Thus these very ones who lead the youth of America and India astray in their false cults have not accepted that living master, that personal Saviour, as the very rock and foundation of every path upon this planetary body, the very incarnate Word itself. Thus, you see, if they have not accepted him in the practical manifestation and the living proof of his teaching, can they truly exemplify the perfect master?

Beloved hearts, look at him hanging upon the cross. Is this a sign of mastery? In the era of his appearing, it was the sign of Rome and the absolute judgment upon all those who defied Rome, as crucifixion was the common means of execution of criminals. Thus reduced to that level, he was not recognized. And in every age the representatives of our Brotherhood, such as yourselves, come bearing the cross of world karma. And in bearing that karma, they bear upon themselves those marks of imperfection that do not reveal that truly the Lord do not receive the light of the Lord himself. <8>

Let us determine in this hour, then, that every lightbearer destined to ascend in this life, destined to know the real Mother flame and the teachings of our Path is now in this hour and shall be forevermore cut free from the fallen ones and from the false Christs and the false prophets <9>who set themselves up as the sign of the hour when indeed the sign of the hour can only be their judgment as they stand between the children of God and our bands of light.

Thus, I AM Arcturus. Let these fallen ones deal with me! So as they do it unto the children of the light, let them know that they will be accountable—accountable for having done it unto the Elohim of God.

1984

The Right Hand of the Cosmic Virgin judgment call is released.

Helios, the Hierarchy of the Solar System came to give a most significant address on July 4 th, 1984. He gave us the assignment to build the golden age for the descent of great souls. He gave us decree 20.12 and much other instruction. He placed in the earth electrodes wherever the sinister force is concentrating, to counter them.

Throughout the 1980’s especially, the Keepers were encouraged to monitor world events, to write their own invocations, to challenge the forces of tyranny in the world.

Here is an example of a footnote to a Pearl of Wisdom. Keepers are expected to use the Teachings given, with their own Christ genius to make effect invocations on these situations.

Chinese takeover of Tibet and destruction of Tibetan culture.

Tibet, once an independent and predominately Buddhist nation ruled by the Dalai Lama, who acted as both spiritual and temporal head, was invaded by the Communist Chinese in 1950. Since then, the Dalai Lama has fled into exile, 1.2 million Tibetans have been killed or starved to death by the Chinese, and 6,254 monasteries–the centers for Tibetan cultural, educational and religious life–have been destroyed. The number of Tibetan monks (100,000 in 1957) has been reduced to 4,000, with only 10 to 15 new monks allowed to enter a monastery each year. Sacred art and statuary have been melted into bullion or sold for foreign exchange, and an estimated 60 percent of Tibet’s religious and historical literature has been burned. The Chinese have forced abortions and sterilizations on Tibetan women and used a policy of population transfer to create a Tibetan underclass by importing millions of Chinese, who now outnumber native Tibetans 7.5 million to 6 million. Estimates of political prisoners range from 20,000 to 100,000. Northeast Tibet has the largest prison camp complex in the world, the Amdo Gulag, capable of holding 10 million prisoners. U.S. government support for Chinese Communists in Tibet .

The U.S. government has held that China gained sovereignty over Tibet in the 1950 Chinese invasion and takeover and in 1978 recognized Tibet as a part of China. Washington does not recognize the Dalai Lama’s government-in-exile in India and has consistently refused the Dalai Lama official State visits. The Reagan administration has also refused to condemn China for its recent atrocities in Tibet. In late September 1987, reports filtered out of Tibet that hundreds of Buddhist monks had staged peaceful protests calling for Tibetan independence. These protests coincided with the Dalai Lama’s visit to the U.S., during which he presented a 5-point peace plan to the Congressional Human Rights Caucus. The House passed a resolution supporting him, and leading members of the Congress sent a letter urging China’s premier to use the 5-point program as a basis of negotiation with the Dalai Lama. The Communists responded on September 24 by gathering 15,000 Tibetans at a stadium in the capital, Lhasa, sentencing eight to prison and two to death, executing one immediately. On October 1, thousands of Tibetans demonstrated in Lhasa and Chinese police fired into the unarmed crowd. At least thirteen, including some police, were reported killed. Throughout the turmoil the Reagan administration and the U.S. State Department supported Communist China’s policies, while the Senate voted to condemn China for their crackdown. On October 6, the State Department voiced strong opposition to the Senate move. The New York Times reported that “one State Department official said that any possible benefits of the Senate action for the Tibetan people were ‘insufficient to outweigh the almost certain damage to the United States-China bilateral relationship.’”
